Why Kris Jenner needs to be your business hero?

The business leader I look up to is not Warren Buffett, is Kris Jenner. Yes, the Kardashian matriarch.

When looking to buy a notebook to journal my business ideas, I picked a notebook with Kris Jenner’s face on it with the words MOMAGER MODE on the cover. After all, she must be doing something right if she has been responsible for making several of her kids multi-millionaires and one is a billionaire. What was interesting to me was that the more I used this particular notebook my curiosity grew as to what is her management style and leadership skills.

After doing some research I have to say, she surpassed my own expectations. She has now become one of my favorite leaders to look up to. Here are some of her management style and leadership skills that are imperative for leaders and business owners to have.

In early 2000, reality tv shows were the thing. You had shows like The Osbournes, The Newlyweds Nick and Jessica, The Simple Life with Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie among others. I bet that for many of us “older folk” remember how Kardashian’s came into our lives. From my point of view, I remembered there was a sex tape being released by Paris Hilton’s stylist and then there was this show of her family and the rest is history. So how did it all start?

This is where Kris Jenner is different from everyone else. Like the anonymous quote says “The Devil works hard, but Kris Jenner works harder.” An event of whom most will consider a crisis, like when a daughter has a sex tape, Kris Jenner turned that situation into a very profitable one. By my calculations, Kris Jenner helped Kim and the family earn about $6 million dollars in 2007. That includes the $5,000,000 settlement from Vivid Entertainment who released the sex video, $110,000 for posing on Playboy and their undisclosed earnings for the first season of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. In 2017 the Kardashian renewed their contract with E! for an alleged $100 Million Dollars for three years.

By the end of 2017, there were speculations that her youngest daughter, Kylie Jenner, was pregnant. One of the youngest billionaires in the world with 141 MILLION total followers from all social media platforms (for a little perspective there are 66.65 million people in the UK) stopped all her public appearances and her social media posts were nothing but cryptic. Everyone was beyond confused by her change in character that on December 28, 2017 Yahoo Finance released an article about their own pregnancy conspiracy theories.

Then on February 4, 2018, when most Americans and American football aficionado’s were preparing to watch the Super Bowl, she announced the birth of her daughter which occurred on February 1, 2018. Out of all the days to make the announcement, they picked the same day of the Super Bowl which drew an average TV audience of about 98.2 million viewers. The #1 search on Google that day was her birth announcement. It surpassed the Super Bowl, Puppy Bowl and This is Us premiere episode. THREE previously highly marketed events. Talk about riding someone else’s wave to spread your message.*

Kris Jenner’s motto is ‘If somebody says no, you’re talking to the wrong person.’ Here are some tips that will help you get that “yes” quicker :

(1) Know your audience. A butcher should not be wasting marketing dollars advertising on a vegan website. Are you speaking to the decision-maker?

(2) Have a clear and purposeful message. Answer the what, who, where, how and why as brief and to the point as possible.

(3) Are you listening to the feedback? Find the reason why they are turning you down and figure out a way to answer their questions and concerns.

(4) Follow up. Follow up. Follow up. As of 2018, the average attention span of a person is 8 seconds. The average follow up to secure a sale is between 5 to 6 times from the first meeting.

If you truly believe in what you have to offer, you will find any way to make it happen rather than give up.

From doing research for this piece I can say that Kris Jenner’s top three values are family, hard work and authenticity.

FAMILY — In the early 90s, she started managing Bruce Jenner now Caitlin Jenner’s public speaking career way before the internet was ever a thought. She believed in Jenner’s ability to be a public speaker, therefore, created a brand for him with a startup capital of just $200. In several interviews she expressed that her main drive was to protect and provide for her kids. Family is everything to Kris.

HARD WORK — Hands down Kris works harder than the Devil himself. Not only do they have the show, everyone has endorsement deals, modeling careers, spin-off shows, stores, cosmetics, perfumes, fashion lines, entertainment apps, and let us not forget Kris had her own talk show! The clan’s hard work philosophy holds everyone accountable, one time Kourtney was accused of not wanting to be a Kardashian because she started arriving late to photoshoots. Arrive on time, have a great attitude, and give your best.

AUTHENTICITY — I don’t personally know the clan, but I can tell there is a high level of authenticity amongst all of them. Yes, they all retain some sort of privacy, however I believe their collective success is due to their authenticity in and out of the reality tv show. People can relate to the family drama and happy moments such as the births of Kris’ grandkids because she has opened the doors to her family’s good, bad and ugly regardless of them being multi-millionaires,

Kris Jenner sees opportunity in every positive and negative situation. Her timing is better than a Swiss-made watch because it’s precise and on time. She is obsessed with getting the “yes” and has a proven track record of delivering results which brings copious amounts of profit for all involved. And most importantly, her values are ingrained deep throughout her family’s DNA. Everyone has ideas however she excels at execution thanks to her family. And that’s why Kris Jenner is my business mentor, hero and whom I aspire to be when I grow up. She is the blueprint every business owner needs to have in order to be a success in business and life.
